POWERED BY MACINTOSH OS XThis server uses Apache 1.3.33, under Mac OS X, 10.4.11 on a Macintosh Gigabit Ethernet Tower with dual 450 mHz processors (1 megabyte backside cache), with 1 gigabytes of RAM, a Sonnet Tempo ATA-133 PCI EIDE adapter card and two 160-gigabyte hard drives from Western Digital. The machine is currently supporting 12 other web sites, including NewsInc.net and ColeGroup.com. It is connected to the Internet via an ADSL line provided by AT&T, 512kbps up, using routers and switches from Netopia and NetGear.

Joomla logoThe software running this site is Joomla!, Version 1.5.15. Joomla is free, open software and the webmaster has been using it since it was called Mambo. The version you are using here runs under PHP 5.2.4, built by Entropy.ch, and MySQL 4.0.24-standard.

The template for this site is based on SiteGround.com's 1.5 No. Nine, Winter. The header was designed in-house, using some royalty-free art that was modified extensively.

Siteground templateWhile the Joomla system allows for code-free editing, I am something of an anachronistic when it comes to WYSIWYG web design – I like to get down and dirty and do my own coding. Since the template came XHTML compliant, I am also doing this coding by hand so that I can become more familiar with XHTML (I hope to eventually convert all my other sites over to it).

This web site – and the components of the light show – were built to the music of a variety of artists, including Donald Fagen and Walter Becker (with and without Steely Dan), Sting (with and without the Police), Steve Winwood (with and without the Spencer Davis Group and/or Cream). not to mention Paul McCartney (with and without the Beatles and/or Wings), John Lennon (with and without the Beatles and/or the Plastic Ono Band), George Harrison (with and without the Beatles and/or The Travelling Wilburys) and Ringo Starr (well, for him, only with the Beatles).

No Christmas music was played during the construction of this site or the light show’s components, as I had to listen to Christmas music ad nauseam while synchronizing lights.

In addition, I found that when building props such as the frames that are on the bannisters, it was more stimulating to alternate music with public radio: I downloaded and listened to shows such as This American Life, Studio 360 with Kurt Andersen, Selected Shorts and Wait Wait ... Don’t Tell Me!
